What is 3D/4D Ultrasound?

3D ultrasound shows a three-dimensional picture of your baby, and 4D gives the added dimension of time, allowing you to see your baby’s movements. 

In other words, you will be watching a live action video of your child in the womb. Unlike medical diagnostic 2D ultrasound, 3D/4D ultrasound allow you to see surface structures of your baby, giving a more realistic view.



3D/4D ultrasound is not used for diagnostic purposes. It is used to promote the bonding experience between mother, father and baby, and to allow siblings and grandparents to share in a sense of closeness with your baby.

How much does it cost, and will my insurance policy cover it?

The cost of a Prenatal Portrait Package is $75. Insurance does not pay for 3D/4D ultrasound because it is not a medical diagnostic procedure.

What is included in the Baby Faces Prenatal Portrait Package?

• 15-30 minute ultrasound
• A CD of 3D portraits from your session to treasure forever

At what point during my pregnancy can I schedule my 3D/4D ultrasound portrait?

We will schedule 3D/4D ultrasounds between 26 and 30 weeks gestation. 28 weeks is ideal, and will typically yield the best results.


Keep in mind that at this age, your baby is too big to appear all in one image. Instead of full-body shots, we take close-up pictures of specific parts.

Will I get the perfect picture?

Please understand that image quality may vary depending on your size and weight, your baby’s position, placenta location, and amount of amniotic fluid.

We cannot guarantee that we will be able to obtain an ideal image of your baby.

How to prepare for your 3D/4D portrait session:

• Drink plenty of water for a few days before your appointment to assure plenty of clear amniotic fluid, enhancing baby’s image.
• You do not need to have a full bladder for the ultrasound.
• You may bring up to 5 guests to view your baby’s portrait session. (Due to current visitor restrictions, this number is limited to one until further notice.)
