NRMC Donates Pharmacy Hood to NHS
Upon completion the cleanroom suite for compounding intravenous ad mixtures, Nevada Regional Medical Center (NRMC) donated its Mobile Isolation Chamber (MIC), commonly referred to as an IV hood, to Nevada High School (NHS) for use in chemistry science labs.
The U.S. Pharmacopeia, which governs the standards for U.S. pharmacies, recently finalized changes for compounding hazardous materials. This update necessitated the special construction of a cleanroom suite and purchase of two new hoods for the pharmacy at NRMC.
When Michelle Branham, science teacher at NHS, learned of the hospital’s cleanroom project, she reached out the hospital about the potential for purchase of the MIC, but NRMC was happy to donate the equipment. Branham says the new chamber will provide a hood that the school previously has not had access to.
“Students will be able to conduct experiments they have not been able to do before,” said Branham. “We are very grateful for this opportunity.”
The MIC is fabricated from stainless steel and engineered plastics. This solid barrier will give an upgrade to NHS chemistry lab experience without the expense of constructing a special work zone. Using the MIC, students will be able to conduct experiments safely, without the need for personal protective equipment such as gowns and goggles. Chemical and shatter resistant plastics provide a clear view of the entire workspace, and sleeves and gloves will allow students to access, withdraw, and re-access the workstation without compromising the environment.
“We are always pleased to support the school and education of our youth in any way that we can,” says Jodee Mashek, PharmD, Director of Pharmacy at NRMC. “We hope the MIC will enhance the high school chemistry program and provide a unique learning experience.”
